Tribe loses R-SR. LB

Posted by thetribehasspoken on July 25, 2006

Wililam and Mary R-Sr. Outside linebacker Ryan Nickell announced he wouldn’t return to the college as a fifth-year senior to instead pursue a career as a pilot in the Air Force. Nickell was a two-year starter, but losing him won’t be as tough to swallow as thought. LB is by far the strongest and deepest position on defense, and with the return of Chris Ndubueze to join players like Josh Rutter and captain Trevor McLaurin(amoung others), I’m not concerned in the least over the LB play this season.

New Scoreboard?, New Basketball Coach

Posted by thetribehasspoken on July 19, 2006

So says Coach Shaver. Told me the purchase is underway(for a scoreboard)

Pretty exciting. Can’t wait for next season now. A video scoreboard is much needed.

New Assistant Basketball Coach

Tony Shaver announced the addition of Ben Wilkins to the coaching staff. A manager and assistant coach at N.C. State, Wilkins also spent time at Apex High in Apex, NC(same city ’07 recriut Marcus Kitts is from). He seems to be strong at recruiting and working with film(funny this and video scoreboard comes out the same day). Here are some quotes, I’ll try to dig up some stuff on Wilkins later tonight.

“Ben was exceptionally impressive during the interview process,” Shaver said. “The professional approach he took in seeking the job was also impressive. He has a very diverse basketball background, which is a very attrac-tive asset. He has proven himself as a successful recruiter at Barton College. He worked with Coach Herb Sendek at N.C. State, and brings a lot of new ideas to our program. I really feel like he is a total package that can help bet-ter the William and Mary program.”

That was from Shaver, this is from Wilkins:

“I am really excited to work with Coach Shaver and the entire staff at William and Mary,” Wilkins said. “I enjoyed my time at N.C. State working with Coach Sendek, but coming to William and Mary is a great opportunity for me to develop as a professional and help to better the program in any way I can.”

Hess update #5

Posted by thetribehasspoken on July 15, 2006

Adam Hess, in his 5th and final game in the Vegas Summer League, scored 9 points on 7 shots. He also picked up a rebound and assist. Not a great game like his last one, but it is his second best game, and I wouldn’t be shocked if he were invited to another camp to get a second look.

Tribe to be on the road for BracketBuster

Posted by thetribehasspoken on July 14, 2006

Next February, all 12 CAA teams will participate in the ESPN-sponsored mid-major hoops festival. According to commissioner Tom Yeager, Delaware, George Mason, Georgia State, Hofstra, Northeastern and VCU will play at home while the league’s other six schools will pick up BracketBusters road games.

I can’t wait to see who we play.

O’s/Nats recap

Posted by thetribehasspoken on July 14, 2006

Here is the much awaited O’s/Nats recap. My mind is a little foggy(the series was 2 weeks ago), but you can blame CVS for that(2 weeks to develop photos?

Friday: Both Chris Ray and Bill Bray tossed me a ball after seeing my tribe hat(Bray would later sign the hat and ball). Back to baseball, Bray can in in the 7th and shut down the O’s in 2/3 of an inning and getting the Nats out of the 7th. But the real show was Chris Ray. Coming in to attempt a 1-run save, the Nats batters were lucky to make contact, and only one batter did. Ray picked up 2 saves, and climbed up to 98 on the speen gun. O’s win.

Saturday: Neither of them got any game action, but Bill Bray came over and talked to me for a few minutes. Very nice guy. In about the 5th inning we had a 25-minute rain delay, no big deal. But going into the bottom of the 9th, a 2 1/2 hour delay forced me to leave and listen to the rest of the game on XM. Ramon Hernandez hit a game-winning single to make the score 3-2 and the O’s win.

Though I wasn’t there, the Nats won the next game and Bill Bray got Washington out of a bases loaded, no out jam(only game up one run, and he was brought into the game with the bases loaded).

Here are the pictures, some aren’t clear but it’s the best I could do.

Ray in the pen

Bray is one throwing, and has high socks

Bray jogging to the mound

Ray leaving the pen for the mound

Ray jogging before the game

Student and teacher(Ray and Mazzone)

A little closer

Ray pitching in the bullpen

B-e-a-utiful form

Did I say he had nice form?

Ray jogs to the mound as the speakers blast “Sweat dreams are made of this” by Marilyn Manson

Pictures are fixed now.

Brendan Harris and Bill Bray traded to the Reds

Posted by thetribehasspoken on July 13, 2006

In an 8-player trade today, Bill Bray, Brendan Harris, Royce Clayton, Gary Majewski, and Daryl Thompson was traded to Cincinnati for Felipe Lopez, Austin Kearns, and Ryan Wagner.

ESPN’s article

Bray, a 23-year-old lefty, was the 13th overall pick in the June 2004 draft and was considered one of the Nationals’ top pitching prospects. He was 1-1 with a 3.91 ERA in 19 relief appearances this season, his first in the majors.

His stats have really gotten better as the year progressed(ERA was over 5), and he will be one of the top few relief pitchers on the Reds the second he walks into the clubhouse. Only one Reds relief pitcher with more than 15 IP has a better ERA than Bray. I think he could easily develop into a MLB closer of Chris Ray’s caliber(though he may not do it as soon as Ray).

Brendan Harris didn’t get much of a mention in the article, but he has produced anywhere and everywhere he has played this season. With New Orleans this year he has hit .283 and put together a .795 OPS, very good for a middle-infielder. With the big club, he hit .250 and had a .646 OPS. Not great, but you can’t expect a player to be spectacular when his only AB’s come when he’s filling in Jose Vidro is a 12-2 blowout. He can play all the infield positions save first, though, and that is very valuable with any team.

But when I take off my green and gold sunglasses, it’s pretty obvious the Nats won this deal. Lopez, Wagner, and Kearns are all solid players, and I would much rather be on that side of the deal.

Speaking of the Nats, I’ll have the pictures of Bray and Ray(though they were bad) up tonight.

Poll. Vote on it.

Laimis, Lietuva Get Silver Medal in Global Games

Posted by thetribehasspoken on July 12, 2006

Hopefully this is a sign of things to come for Laimis, as I can’t really remember him playing this well for the Tribe in his first 2 seasons. The fact that he played the most minutes on the team for a solid basketball country is a great plus for me, and I expect him to really step up this season.

Hess plays at 4:00 EST time today.
